Training To Be An Amputee

A face-to-face peer-led information and support programme delivered by the Limbless Association, a national charity supporting lives beyond limb loss for over 40 years.

Information is Power. To inform, support and empower amputees to optimise physical and mental health and wellbeing outcomes by better navigating the challenges of life beyond limb loss.

Through a structured programme of support that will cover a broad range of key topics including introducing coping strategies for improved physical and mental health. A course that is devised by amputees for amputees, supported by sector experts and clinicians.

While the programme is aimed at those earlier on in their limb loss journey, any amputee can join if the course content is of interest and would benefit individual onward rehabilitation whatever stage you might be at. If you’re feeling isolated, overwhelmed and struggling to cope, this might be the course for you where you can hear from the experts and be supported by other amputees.

The LA staff team is supported by our trained Volunteer Visitors (peer mentors). There’ll be plenty of opportunity throughout the course and beyond to talk to other experienced amputees.

We’ll be running sessions at various locations in Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend throughout 2024. By getting in touch with the team you’ll receive information about dates and locations.

5 hours per week over 2 days for 2 weeks.

Topics to be covered during the information sessions will include rights and entitlements, living independently, getting the best out of your rehabilitation and the wider support and services available from the LA.

Hear from experts across a range of topics; legal, clinical, organisations supporting independence (e.g. wheelchair services, Motability).

At the Thursday sessions, refreshments and a sandwich lunch will be provided. Those attending the course can be confident that they’ll be supported in an amputee-led group – by LA staff team and volunteers. Peer support and networking for amputees and families is an important aspect of the delivery of this project.

Terms and conditions

• There is no charge for the course. To gain maximum benefit we would strongly recommend that every participant commits to participating in the whole course. However, we understand that for various reasons this might not be possible. Any attendance gaps will be supported with supplementary information and ongoing support from the team.

• Sessions are fully inclusive and will be operated under a strict behavioural code of conduct. Every participant will have a unique set of challenges along with those they share with others. Every opinion and experience will be shared with respect and trust in the spirit of shared learning and peer support.

• All participants will respect the confidentiality of others.

• All participants will agree to support the training monitoring and evaluation processes by completing pre and post-training assessment forms.
