Virtually Speaking about…Driving Assessments for Amputees with James Hinkins and Wendy Valentine from Herts Ability
Herts Ability is part of Driving Mobility, a registered charity that accredits a network of 20 driving assessment centres covering the whole of the UK. They offer professional information and assessment so disabled and elderly people can gain or retain their independence through driving.
Herts Ability has a fleet of modern, dual controlled, specially adapted cars that will very often accommodate an individual’s needs. During their driving assessments, they will look at your physical and cognitive ability before helping you trial a host of adaptations until they find the one that suits you best. Once they have found the best method of control, they’ll support you in becoming familiar with this new way of driving and aid you in reaching a safe standard before recommending where to get your own car adapted.
Their assessments are all completed by an Occupational therapist – who will look at your physical and cognitive ability and ensure that any adaptations won’t impact your long-term well-being – and a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor with the skills and expertise to support the transition into driving with adaptations.
They also have equipment that can help passengers access vehicles as well as loading/unloading wheelchairs.
The aim of this event is to create a safe and inclusive space for the benefit of the Limbless Association’s members and service users. If you are not registered with us, we will contact you in advance to establish the reason for your interest in this session.
